Data Engineering Deep Dive

Modern Data Stack &
Open Lakehouses

The paradigm shift from proprietary data warehouses to open table formats, decoupled storage/compute, and streaming-first analytical fabrics.

🧊

1. Apache Iceberg: The Open Table Standard

Apache Iceberg provides high-performance SQL tables on object storage (AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure ADLS) that behave like SQL tables in relational databases. It avoids the directory-listing bottlenecks of Hive and brings ACID guarantees, hidden partitioning, and schema evolution without rewriting data.

Snapshot Isolation & ACID

Writers generate new table metadata files without mutating existing files. Readers query consistent snapshots, enabling concurrent reads and writes without locks.

Hidden Partitioning

Users don’t need to know how data is partitioned (e.g. days(event_ts)) when querying. Iceberg prunes files automatically without error-prone partition column filters.

Engine Agnostic

Query the exact same Iceberg tables simultaneously from Snowflake, Trino, Apache Spark, DuckDB, or Google BigQuery via open REST catalogs.

2. Event Streaming: Apache Kafka & Apache Flink

Batch processing is no longer sufficient for fraud detection, operational metrics, or dynamic agent context. Apache Kafka acts as the immutable durable log, while Apache Flink powers stateful stream processing with exactly-once event-time semantics.

3. High-Speed Columnar: DuckDB & ClickHouse

Modern analytics bifurcates into distributed high-concurrency real-time OLAP (ClickHouse) and embedded in-process zero-dependency vectorized analytics (DuckDB).

In-Process & Serverless

DuckDB

The SQLite for Analytics. Runs inside your Python, Node.js, or WebAssembly process. Directly reads Parquet and Iceberg files on S3 without copying or ETL overhead.

Vectorized Engine Zero Infrastructure Wasm Compatible
Sub-Second Distributed

ClickHouse

Extreme throughput columnar database engineered for customer-facing analytics dashboards, telemetry log aggregation, and real-time materialized views over billions of events.
